John 16:5-11 (NIV)
now I am going to him who sent me. None of you asks me, 'Where are you
going?' 6Rather, you are filled with grief because I have said these
things. 7But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going
away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go,
I will send him to you. 8When he comes, he will prove the world to be
in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: 9about sin,
because people do not believe in me; 10about righteousness, because I
am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; 11and about
judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.
It's Good for Me to Leave
has a startling statement in our passage today. He says that he's
going to leave his disciples... and it's for their good!
could Jesus' departure possibly be in their best interests? The secret
is that he's not leaving them alone. Instead, he's sending his Spirit.
When the Spirit arrives, the disciples will be lifted to a new level.
Rather than Jesus with them, they will have the Spirit of God within them! God himself will take up residence in their hearts.
this is one of the most remarkable promises of God. Today, if you are a
believer in Jesus, the Spirit of God indwells you every moment. It's
true that Jesus himself is not physically walking beside you. But you
have something even better... the Spirit of Jesus living within you.
Far too many Christ-followers don't think about this reality... or even know about it!
Someone has moved in to your heart. He's the Spirit of God.
