Why did Levi Follow Jesus?

Today's Scripture

Luke 5:27-32 (NIV)

After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector by the name of Levi sitting at his tax booth. "Follow me," Jesus said to him, 28and Levi got up, left everything and followed him.
29Then Levi held a great banquet for Jesus at his house, and a large crowd of tax collectors and others were eating with them. 30But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law who belonged to their sect complained to his disciples, "Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?"
31Jesus answered them, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 32I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance."

Today's Message

Why did Levi Follow Jesus?

What makes a grown man leave behind an incredibly lucrative job, security, and wealth to follow an itinerant preacher?

There are many reasons for Levi's decision. God sovereignly called him by the Spirit. Levi perhaps saw the sinfulness and futility of this ways. Perhaps he was pulled by the opportunity to start life over again.

But certainly one of the main draws was simply that he sensed that Jesus cared about him. Jesus wasn't impressed or afraid of Levi's wealth and authority. He didn't despise him either, like so many religious folks. Instead, Jesus genuinely cared for him. He cared for him like a compassionate doctor cares for a sick and hurting patient.

The Pharisees couldn't understand this approach. Holiness to them was keeping your distance from people like Levi. Holiness was certainly NOT drawing close to them.

How different are the ways of Jesus. He welcomes you just as you are. He will challenge you and he will change you for sure. But he won't retract in horror and hatred at your sin. Instead, he gently calls you to a higher road.

When he says, "Follow me," how will you respond today?
