Exciting Change Coming for Your 6th Grader!

Sixth Grade Announcement from Valley Church on Vimeo.

In an ongoing effort to provide the most effective ministry for families at Valley Church, the Children’s Ministry and Junior High Ministry are excited to make a change that will provide a new opportunity for 6th grade students.

In January 2018, 6th grade students will transition from the Children's Ministry into the Junior High Ministry. This means 6th graders will attend Junior High Wednesday night and ‪Sunday morning programs, and they can participate in all junior high events and retreats starting in January.

We believe that this change is in the best interest of 6th grade students and their families. Here are a few key reasons why:

  • This change allows students to spend extra time in the Junior High Ministry and participate in activities both inside and outside the context of the church. These activities are designed to increase the likelihood of students developing meaningful connections with other students and adults during junior high.
  • Kids are statistically entering puberty at an increasingly younger age, meaning that 6th grade students are more frequently exposed to the same issues typically faced by 7th and 8th grade students.

  • Multiple school districts in our area now group 6th graders with 7th and 8th graders. Many area churches also already include 6th graders in their student ministry, so this would put our programming more in alignment with other ministries in central Iowa.

Here are some key dates to keep in mind:

  • Fall 2017: 6th grade students will participate in Children’s Ministry and Route 56 on Wednesdays and Sundays.
  • Wednesday, January 3, 2018: 6th Grade Parent Meeting. There is no Children’s or Student Ministry programming that night.
  • Sunday, January 7, 2018: 6th graders officially move into the Junior High Ministry.

Q: Where will my 6th grader go in the fall?

A:  6th grade students will participate in Route 56 on Wednesday nights and 4th-6th grade Sunday morning programming from September through December.

Q: How will this change affect the Children’s Ministry?

A:  5th grade students will experience a modified version of the current Wednesday night Route 56 program after 6th graders transition to junior high. Sunday morning programming will run as a 4th-5th grade program after 6th graders transition to junior high.

Q: Will my student get new small group leaders after the January transition?

A:  Our hope is that 6th grade small group leaders will spend the entire school year with the same group of students, which will help provide consistency as students transition to a new ministry in the middle of the school year.

Q: Why are we moving up students in the middle of the school year as opposed to the beginning of the summer, which is when students normally move up?

A:  The transition from Children's Ministry to Junior High Ministry is important and we want to make sure students don't get lost in the process. A mid-year transition ensures that the Junior High Ministry can provide maximum focus on 6th graders as they enter a new ministry.

Q: Who can I contact if I have questions?

A:  You can email Jacob King in the Children's Ministry or Joe Budish in the Junior High Ministry.
